How to Price Flowers

Starting a new floral business but don’t know how to charge? Trying to figure our how to price flowers as a wedding florist. How much to charge for wedding flowers? How to price wedding flowers?

I’ve been there. I’ve done that. AND I also found almost no help anywhere. So, I figured I’d share what I know to help make it easier for you.

Florist are more than just flower. We are a luxury service. To help you get started, here is the Industry Standard Pricing Model for Everyday Flowers and Wedding & Events. They are two different pricing models.

Everyday Flowers: Wholesale x 3 + time (or 20%)

Wedding & Events: Wholesale x 3.5 + 30-50%

Please do not attach your worth to the price! It just is what it is. This pricing model is such a blessing because all we have to do is plug in the numbers and it gives us a cost.

WHAT THE PRICING MODEL DOES NOT INCLUDE

These pricing models do not include other expenses such as delivery, set up, or take down. If you have a couple asking you to come to the venue to set up, create a ceremony piece, and clean up after the event, you need to charge them extra for that service. Remember charges such as your time, rental car, added employees, expertise, gas/milage, and more. Your time is not free!! You would never send an employee to do that work and not pay them so don’t forget to pay yourself for that service.

NOTE:

I often forget to charge for materials. As a reminder don’t forget to add on costs such as ribbons, vases, mechanics for a design, packaging, and more, when you use the standard pricing model. Yes, you will also charge these out using the pricing model. The client will never pay for an item at the same cost you purchase it for. You are running a profitable business. You need to make money. It’s not ripping them off it is simply the retail prices.

PRICING EXAMPLE BREAKDOWN

We are going to pretend you are making some kind of ceremony backdrop for the day and I will breakdown the costs using the pricing model.

Hard Goods/materials needed: Chicken Wire, Floral foam, Zip Ties (wholesale cost: $8.00)(Retail cost or what the costumer pays: $24.00-$40.00+)

Flowers: Wholesale cost $400 (retail cost/costumer cost: $2,800)

Transportation/Delivery Fee: Two hours of total travel time to and from venue (you plus one employee), Gas/milage, packing up & transporting flowers safely (Cost: $450.80)

Time at venue per hour: 3 hours spent at the venue, two people working at $65-$100+ an hour. (Cost: $600) (Yes, this is a career salary pay, you are not working a $12.00 an hour job. This is your income so you can live & your career pay).

Total Cost for Client = around $3,890.80 + taxes

Don’t be surprised if the florists costs more than the items themself. This is normal in the flower world and in other business’ as well.

This is why I will often say, florists are more than just flowers. The Industry Standard Pricing Model for wedding flowers is a gift. It will allow you to simple plug in the numbers and NOT attached your worth to the price.
